influenzaFirst human death from bird flu in the US
Louisiana health authorities announced on Monday the first human death from bird flu, noting that it was an elderly patient who had other illnesses.

Health authorities indicated that the patient, who was over 65 years old, was hospitalized due to respiratory problems, and was the first adult human case of infection with the H5N1 virus in the United States.
State health authorities stated that the patient "contracted the virus after being exposed to domestic and wild birds."
They added that the "thorough investigations" they conducted "did not lead to the identification of additional cases of the virus or evidence of human-to-human transmission. This patient remains the only human case of H5N1 in Louisiana."
They explained that for these reasons, the health risk posed by bird flu remains "low."
The authorities noted that "people who work with birds, poultry or cattle, or who are exposed to these animals in their free time, are most at risk."
