Abundance of dairy products boosts food security during Ramadan, with production exceeding 2.6 million tons
The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture revealed that dairy products are experiencing a significant abundance in the markets, with production exceeding 2.6 million tons. This reflects their vital role in meeting consumer needs during the holy month of Ramadan.
This came during an awareness campaign launched by the Ministry in conjunction with the advent of Ramadan, titled "Our Journey from Our Land." The campaign aims to encourage the consumption of local dairy products and their derivatives, such as cream, yogurt, milk, and other dairy products, and to strengthen the role of farmers and producers in achieving food security. The Ministry highlighted its efforts to support national production and improve the quality and safety of food products, ensuring their continued availability during the holy month.
During its campaign, the Ministry explained that the Kingdom achieved a self-sufficiency rate in dairy products of up to 129% in 2023. This reinforces its position as a leading producer of dairy products, affirming its commitment to developing the sector's quality by supporting local investments, ensuring product availability in the market, and improving the quality of supply, in line with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
The Ministry stated that the livestock sector is a fundamental pillar in supporting dairy production in the Kingdom, with more than (7.4) million heads of goats and approximately (502) thousand heads of cows, contributing to meeting the needs of the local market for dairy products. It explained that the sector is witnessing remarkable development through the adoption of the latest technologies in livestock breeding and animal production, which enhances production efficiency and ensures resource sustainability.
It is worth noting that the campaign aims to raise community awareness of the importance of rationalizing food consumption, reducing waste, and promoting a culture of optimal utilization of available food resources. The campaign also seeks to encourage the consumption of local products and support national farmers and producers to ensure sustainable food production and enhance food security in the Kingdom.
