Environment Authority: The death of the "sperm whale" in the Wilayat of Barka was due to natural conditions
The Environment Authority confirmed that initial information suggested that the causes of the death of the "sperm whale" off the coast of the Suwadi area in the Wilayat of Barka were due to natural conditions.
The Authority reported that the stranded whale was more than 15 meters long, and that the autopsy showed the presence of many parasites in it indicating that it was suffering from a disease, explaining that the analysis procedures for the samples are still ongoing in the laboratories of Sultan Qaboos University.
The Authority indicated that it studied the identity of the whale and the causes of its death, as it formed a work team to deal with the emergency incident, which spent about 55 continuous working hours during which it collected the required samples before burying the whale, in cooperation with a number of governmental and private agencies.
It is worth noting that the sperm whale is found in deep waters in the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea, and its length reaches 18 meters, and weighs approximately 57,000 kg.
The sperm whale is one of the most famous types of whales in the world, and is characterized by containing raw ambergris in its guts. It takes the shape of a square from the side, and its lower jaw is relatively small. It feeds on squid.
