antoine sayegh 150Do you remember Sabah’s song: “The world is a wheel...”? Today, it’s no longer like that! And God knows what will happen tomorrow, as if the world has turned upside down... What was forbidden by the Quran and the Bible has become a thing of the past. The shyness of humankind has been shattered. The killing of tens even thousands of children is now being considered, and the killing of tens even hundreds of innocent people has become commonplace.

Stealing from people in broad daylight has become legally, possibly even religiously permissible. Despotism and enslavement reign under the guise of third-millennium democracy. I no longer see anything as it was between the past century and the present century! In the past, all of us, my family and I, would gather around the TV and eat from what was available at home. But today – if the family gathers – they are like strangers to each other, everyone staring and tapping on their phones or laptops... as if they are in another place. Apparently, everything has turned upside down, and we are waiting in astonishment for the wonders of AI, from GPT to Google and its siblings... For me, bowed under the weight of the years, I no longer see the past except as the opposite of the present... Habits have changed... morals have changed... the way people live has changed... There’s no need to list the harms of today’s lifestyle; it’s enough to remember some sayings that were common in the past and what they have become today... A kind word is a passport to all hearts. But today, a kind word is no longer a passport to the heart; all hearts have become hardened. As pride increases, joy decreases. But today, joy only comes with pride. Gibran Khalil Gibran said: Do not give more or less, give each person what they give you. But today, we have to give everything to those who steal and plunder from us. Treat people the way you want to be treated. But today, tastes and morals have changed, so do not treat people the way you want to be treated. Do not hate evil, for it might be good for you. But today, how can we not hate evil when it surrounds us from every side, and goodness has become a thing of the past. The world is in great shape... this is what they used to say. And there’s no need to recall the state of this world today in particular, and I could write many sayings, perhaps all that was said about the virtues of decent living and humane humanity... But it seems that was in the past... Life’s priorities have changed... Morals have changed... Humans have changed, as if they are being controlled by a remote control, and no one knows who is holding this remote... And our future, and the future of our children and even their grandchildren, sits on the edge of a knife... And what can we do except repeat with the poet: O’ you who defend the weak, don’t you see what the hunter does to the bird?
